This information identifies the current requirements for using Zedmed based on the Firebird database. This information is intended only as a guide to assist practices in identifying and planning their computer hardware requirements.

Other Hardware

Hardware Recommended
UPS Uninterrupted power supply recommended on server to protect against power surges or spikes. as well as any unexpected cuts to mains power for your building/server room.
Network Mandatory support for TCP/IP.
Zedmed recommends obtaining independent expert advice from a qualified network technician regarding network design security (firewall) and cabling structure (wired or wireless).
Printers The Zedmed system requires a Windows printer that supports your chosen operating system. along with the original equipment manufacturer printer driver- any middle to high range Windows printer. determined by the intended workload. Multifunction printers are not recommended.
Scanners Zedmed requires that scanners be TWAIN-compliant.
Internet Broadband (no dial up).
Backup and disaster recovery All practices that have ‘mission critical’ data should have a full disaster recovery plan in place. This requires a full backup and restore facility at a minimum, for the practice server, but could offer significant benefit if extended to all computers that perform important functions or store practice data. This will allow you to restore the operating system, network settings, applications and all data on the server. Zedmed recommends that practices consult a suitably qualified professional to establish needs in this area.

Terminal Server/Remote Desktop Environment

In an environment that relies on remote or branch offices, can provide enhanced capabilities to these sites and reduce the network bandwidth required for applications use. For example, a practice might have essential medical software applications that would not be cost-effective to deploy and maintain in every branch. With,your software can be available at a central medical practice and accessed as needed by practice staff and doctors at different locations. A centralised-application strategy often results in a reduction of application server infrastructure at various branches or locations, requiring less maintenance and on-site support.

Regulatory Compliance Requirements

From a business-IT perspective, data security and the ability to meet regulatory requirements remains paramount. Remote helps secure an application and its data in a central location, reducing the risk of accidental data loss caused by, for example, the misplacement or failure of a portable computer.

The key requirement for Zedmed is to have a separate database server and a remote desktop connection server limited to 15 users with concurrent connections. Zedmed recommends that practices considering remote desktop connection or citrix environments consult a qualified technician to configure and manage their computer network services.

Important

The requirements of other software installed on your server can adversely affect the server’s performance and slow down the Zedmed system. It’s therefore recommended that you install additional software on other servers/workstations to perform these tasks.
